SSPM Pontiac, L.P., an affiliate of GIGI, purchased the former Smurfit-Stone mill in Portage-du-Fort in January 2010. This is the second Smurfit-Stone mill purchased in Canada by GIGI.
Currently in progress is Phase I, involving the clean-up, repair, reconfiguration and reorganization of the site. GIGI began Phase I in the first half of 2010 and anticipates this phase completing in fall 2011. Phase I will cost approximately $15 million (US) and will create opportunities for local businesses specializing in construction, renovation and repair. GIGI has already hired workers in the Pontiac and anticipate more employment opportunities for area residents.
Phase II will consist of redeveloping and reviving the site in collaboration with the community and local authorities as well as provincial and federal governments. Plans for the site are currently being formulated. Goals are for the site to be restored and redeveloped to attract companies in environmental fields, such as clean and renewable energy technologies. A resolution dated October 26, 2010, introduced by the MRC, declared the Green Investment Group site in Portage-du-Fort the Pontiac Regional Industrial Park.
Trebio is the first company to set up operations on the site of the former Smurfit-Stone pulp mill in the Outaouais community of Portage-du-Fort, a project that will necessitate an overall investment of $19 million. Trebio specializes in the manufacturing of energy wood pellets to supply to the residential, commercial, industrial and institutional markets in Canada, the United States and Europe. The plant will have an annual production capacity of 130,000 tons. It’s anticipated that Trebio will provide nearly 150 jobs, 60 of which will be generated as direct positions the first year.
